Downtown Athens

9/14/19

ACG (The American College of Greece) is great in the way that throughout our semester here, we have the opportunity to go on free trips around different islands and parts of Greece. They provide free transportation to and from the location along with a guided tour, and lunch on them. Today the trip was to downtown Athens. We explored our new home for the next three months, along with seeing the Panathenaic stadium, the Acropolis from a distance and did a little window shopping before we had lunch. We were immersed in the Greeks culture from street performances to architecture. Something that I learned today that was was so interesting was that the Athens Panathenaic Stadium, where the first ancient olympics were held in 1896, was built entirely out of marble and it is the only stadium in the world built that way.

At lunch we were all served authentic greek salad, then tzatziki sauce to dip our bread in and oufff was it incredible. Hopefully, I can whip it up for myself at some point during the semester because I have heard it’s quite easy to make. It is made of yogurt, olive oil, cucumbers, lemon juice, garlic, dill and salt combined. Then we were brought cheese pies which are my new favorite, followed by gyros and after all that food I thought we were done but then they brought out dessert which was greek yogurt with honey and WOW it was all so delicious.

greek phrase of the day: Δεν μιλάω ελληνικά… pronounced “Den miláo elliniká” meaning I don’t speak Greek (just in case)
